RIGHT NOW

"Yesterday is history. Tomorrow's a mystery.

Today is God's gift, and that's why we call it The Present."

-Anonymous

These days so many people find themselves rushing through life and missing some of the golden opportunities that are right before them. I have been practicing SLOWING DOWN and living in the present moment. If you think about it, the present is all that we have.

I’ll share a story that illustrates why this is so important. I have confirmed that this story is true by visiting my favorite Urban Legends website at www.snopes.com.

In Washington, DC, at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six pieces by J.S. Bach for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.

About 4 minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

After 6 minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

After 10 minutes, a 3-year-old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly.

After 45 minutes, the musician had played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

When the man finished playing, silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin handcrafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1713 - an instrument that he bought several years ago for a reported price of $3.5 million. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell's performance, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was arranged by The Washington Post as an experiment in context, perception and priorities.

This experiment raised several questions:

  • In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
  • If so, do we stop to appreciate it?
  • Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made, how many other things are we missing as we rush through life?

What are some of the life’s pleasures that you are missing out on? Even if for just a few minutes a day, SLOW DOWN and take time to enjoy and appreciate what is available to you RIGHT NOW…not when you get that next promotion, or when you start earning the kind of income you desire.

I just spent the past three weeks traveling to 8 cities in Australia and New Zealand, all on business. I had some down time to enjoy each city, and I was amazed at how much easier it is for me to experience Right Now moments when I break out of my daily routine and spend time in a new environment.

Even if you cannot travel far, I encourage you to break from your daily routine and spend a few minutes enjoying some Right Now moments!

If you feel like you don't have time to spare for these kinds of Right Now moments, perhaps it's time to check out my FREE webinar below.  I will teach you some strategies that will help you use your time more productively.  I have been teaching this monthly class since 2003, and it continues to be my most popular webinar.  The next one is coming up soon, so register today!

Need Help Getting Organized?
Need help getting organized?

This FREE webinar will help!

Is this you?

  • Do you often wonder where the time went?
  • Does your to-do list keep getting longer, even though it feels like nothing is getting done?
  • Have you totally given up on keeping a to-do list? (After all, you're never able to cross anything off, so what's the point?)
  • Do you have trouble finding what you need?
  • Do you feel like you’ll NEVER catch up?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, we can help out by teaching you some powerful techniques that will help you increase your personal and professional productivity. In fact, don't be surprised if we can add an hour or MORE to your day EVERY DAY. Imagine what you would do with an extra hour each and every day. That is an additional 365 hours or over nine 40 hour work weeks of extra time. Think of this next time you make the statement, “I wish I had more time”.

Here's what you'll be able to accomplish when you attend my upcoming webinar and put what you learn into practice:

  • Set your priorities and focus on what matters most (do this and you'll be amazed at how fast you can start crossing things off your to-do list).
  • Remember important follow-up tasks BEFORE rather than AFTER… (wouldn't that save tons of stress not to mention embarrassment?).
  • Efficiently handle mail, filing, returning phone calls and other repetitive tasks so you'll have more time to do the things you LOVE to do.
  • Streamline information management and communications (no more time wasted on information that's "interesting but not relevant” to what you need NOW).
  • Relax and enjoy a less cluttered environment.
