Being vs. Doing

“What does it matter how much we do

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip.

You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just ponder them and you’ll get the point of this exercise.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

None of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are easily forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1.List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2.Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3.Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4.Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5.Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Was that easier?

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

We are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS. When we focus on who we are being, the “doings” will take care of themselves.

As you prepare for the New Year, here are a few questions to consider:

1. What brings you peace, joy, balance, and a sense of purpose? What drains your energy?

 

2. What intentions do you have in the following areas of your life? Write down your responses from a place of who you are BEING, not from what you are currently DOING.  Write the statements as if you are currently being, doing or having what you desire, beginning each statement with "I am..."

  • Contribution / legacy (career, volunteer work, hobbies)
  • Relationships (family, friends, mentors)
  • Health (physical, mental, spiritual)
  • Prosperity (finances, lifestyle)
  • Environment (local, global, personal)

3. What action steps are you committed to taking in the coming year in order to manifest these intentions in your life? What activities, thoughts, or old beliefs are you committed to letting go of?

Commit to your decisions! This is important because it builds trust and confidence in staying true to yourself, even when temptation, guilt & outer demands create roadblocks for you. Schedule check-ins with yourself in order to stay on track. Revisit your responses to these questions, and make revisions as needed.

To add further accountability, partner with someone and check in daily via email or phone.  Share at least one intention each day for these three areas of your life: happy, healthy, wealthy.  Also share "done" or "not done" as you report on the previous day's intentions.
